MAJOR RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

  • Research as a Summer Undergraduate Intern (SURIP Program) at Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, Hershey, PA: I researched on the effect of enhanced REDD1 (Regulated in Development and DNA Damage response 1) expression due to diabetes-induced hyperglycemia on liver autophagy. A similar study has been carried out by my research supervisor and principal investigator on the effects of enhanced REDD1 expression, due to diabetes-induced hyperglycemia, on retinopathy. Essentially, I identify autophagy markers in hepatocytes due to diabetes-induced hyperglycemia, comparing proteins that are expressed (with special interest to REDD1) on wild type mice against REDD1 knockout mice. This is a study that has the primary objective of preventing blindness and liver autophagy among diabetic patients.
  • Research on the effects of Moringa on blood sugar: We carried out experiments on Wistar albino rats treated with allozan to understand the effects of the plant, Moringa, on blood sugar. We observed their blood sugar after meals, against a control, and discovered that Moringa plays an equivalent role as insulin in minimizing blood sugar. Our paper on this research can be seen under “Publications”. This inspired the inception of my moringa tea industry, Miracle Tea Co.
